ASTON, PA. — The Hiram College volleyball team began its 2011 NCAA Division III Tournament run with a 3-1 victory against Stevenson (Md.) University today (Friday, Nov. 11) in the first round on the campus of Neumann University in Aston, Pa. [Match Statistics]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 27-8 overall and Stevenson ends its season with a 31-4 overall mark.
Hiram defeated Stevenson by the scores of 25-21, 25-20, 19-25 and 25-18. Leading the Terrier offense was senior two-time AVCA All-Region outside hitter Shaina Bryan (South Euclid/Brush) with 14 kills. Senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference outside hitter Megan Woodard (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) and junior outside hitter Ariel Pund (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) were tied for second with nine kills each. Senior setter Taylor Summerfield (Warren/Howland) had a team-high 26 set assists and was followed by freshman setter Audriana Lucha (Perry/Lake Catholic) with 17 assists.
Defensively, freshman libero Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) recorded a team-best 22 digs. Pund was second with 16 digs and Bryan had 14 digs. In addition, Summerfield added 12 digs. Senior two-time All-NCAC middle hitter Kristi Opfer (Garrettsville/Garfield) had a team-high nine blocks (nine assists) followed by senior middle hitter Katie Rumora (Canal Winchester) with six blocks (six assists).
Hiram will advance to face the winner of the Eastern (Pa.) University and Penn State-Altoona match tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 12) at 6 p.m. in Aston, Pa.
