CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY. — The Hiram College volleyball team lost both of its matches on the first day of the season-opening Thomas More (Ky.) College Tournament today (Friday, Sept. 2) in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Following today’s matches, the Terriers start the season with a 0-2 overall record.
Hiram started the tournament against defending Division III National Champion and 2011 Preseason No. 1, Calvin (Mich.) College. The Terriers looked to be headed to a possible upset winning the first two sets, 25-23 and 27-25. But Calvin would come back and win three straight sets, beginning with a pair of victories, 25-13 and 25-19 in sets three and four to tie the match at two games apiece, forcing a fifth and deciding set. Calvin also prevailed in the final set, 15-8, to capture the 3-2 overall match victory.
The Terriers would seek to avenge the loss to Calvin in their second match of the day, this time against Otterbein University. But it would be the Cardinals who would come out on top, winning in straight sets by the scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-11 to claim a 3-0 match win.
Hiram will conclude the two-day tournament tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 3) with a pair of matches against host school Thomas More and Transylvania (Ky.) University. The Terriers will take on the Saints at 10 a.m., followed by a matchup against the Pioneers at noon.
