SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — Second-seeded Hiram College volleyball team defeated third-seeded DePauw (Ind.) University, 3-0, tonight (Friday, Nov. 4) in a semifinal match of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield. [Match Statistics]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 26-7 overall and the Tigers end their season with a 21-12 overall mark.
Hiram defeated DePauw by the scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17. Leading the Terrier offense was senior All-Region outside hitter Shaina Bryan (South Euclid/Brush) with 13 kills. Senior All-NCAC middle hitter Kristi Opfer (Garrettsville/Garfield) and junior outside hitter Ariel Pund (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) were second with eight kills each. Senior setter Taylor Summerfield (Warren/Howland) tallied a team-high 25 set assists and was followed by freshman Audrianna Lucha (Perry/Lake Catholic) with 15 assists.
Defensively, Hiram was led by freshman libero Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) with 19 digs. Bryan was second with 18 digs and Pund added 12 digs. Senior All-NCAC middle hitter Andrea Kaminsky (Canton/GlenOak) finished with a team-high seven total blocks (one solo and six assists). Fellow senior middle hitter Katie Rumora (Canal Winchester) was second with six total blocks (one solo and five assists).
Hiram will advance to its 10th straight NCAC Tournament Championship match and will set up a rematch with top-seeded Wittenberg University tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 5). It is also the 10th consecutive time that the two teams have met for the conference tournament title with Wittenberg winning eight of the last nine meetings. The last victory for the Terriers against the Tigers in NCAC Tournament play was in 2006. The championship match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Pam Evans Smith Arena with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
