GROVE CITY, PA. — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams completed the final day of competition of the annual Grove City (Pa.) College Invitational today (Saturday, Dec. 3) in Grove City, Pa. The Terrier women placed fifth while the men also finished in fifth place. [FINAL Results]
The Hiram women finished the two-day event with a team total of 233 points to place fifth of seven teams. Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) College won the team title with 1,227 points. Misericordia (Pa.) University was second with 976 points and East Stroudsburg (Pa.) University was third with 707 points.
Individually, senior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) had the top overall finish on the final day of events with a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 5:14.31. She also placed ninth in the 1650-yard free with a time of 20:49.82 and finished just outside the top-ten in the 200-yard butterfly (2:28.45) in 11th place. In addition to Dorschel, senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) placed in the top-ten with a fifth-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle (19:40.70). Teammate and junior Carson Applewhite (Atherton, Calif./San Francisco) posted a top-ten mark in the same event, touching the wall in 10th place with a mark of 21:26.07. Freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) placed seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.37). Freshman Samantha Polmanteer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) placed 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.10). Rounding out the top performances for the wome was senior Sydney Kispert-Bostick (Detroit, Mich./Frasier) finished eighth in the three-meter diving event with a total of 118.25 points.
The Hiram men finished the invitational with a team-total of 208 points to place fifth of six teams. Misericordia won the men’s title with 950 points. Grove City was second with 729 points and Washington & Jefferson was third with 649 points.
The men were led by sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) who recorded a pair of third-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.47) and the 200-yard breast (2:25.54). Also posting top marks for the men was sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe) who finished fourth in both the 400-yard IM (4:54.11) and the 1650-yard free (18:38.08).
The Hiram swim teams will travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Saturday, Dec. 10 in a non-conference meet. The Terrier men will face Grove (Pa.) City in dual meet action while the women will compete against both Chatham and Grove City in a tri-meet. The first event is scheduled for 1 p.m.
