BETHANY, W.VA. — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams defeated Bethany (W.Va.) College today (Saturday, Nov. 5) in a non-conference dual meet in Bethany, W.Va. The Terrier women defeated the Bisons, 156-90, and the men won, 124-58. [Meet Results]
The women knotched their third victory of the season to improve to 3-2 overall in dual meet competition and the men recorded their first win of the season and improve to 1-3 overall.
The women won 10 events and were led by freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) who won three individual races. Buckley touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.37), the 50-yard freestyle (26.80 seconds) and the 100-yard free (58.51 seconds). Also winning multiple events was senior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:33.06) and the 400-yard individual medley (5:19.70) and senior Sydney Kispert-Bostick (Detroit, Mich./Frazer) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with point totals of 111.15 and 105.75 respectively. Other event winners included senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) in the 1650-yard free (19:59.93), sophomore Jessie Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:38.60) and freshman Samantha Polmantees (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.98). The women also had a winning relay with the team members of Gruden, freshman Becca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local), freshman Kailey Saywell (Kirtland) and senior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge/Kenston) posting a combined time of 4:40.38 in the 400-yard free relay.
The men won all individual events except the diving with several multiple event winners. Sophomore Job Fields (Chillicothe) won three events in the 1650-yard free (19:15.78), the 500-yard free (5:38.27) and the 400-yard IM (5:01.28). Freshman Kyle Meggas (Lakewood) captured both the 200-yard free (1:58.85) and the 200-yard back (2:21.98) events. Sophomore Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) came in first in the 100-yard breast (1:08.11) as well as the 200-yard breast (2:35.16). Freshman Curtis Webster (Aurora) posted victories in the 200-yard fly (2:37.57) and the 100-yard fly (1:02.63). Junior James Degroff (Cuyahoga Falls) won the 50-yard free (22.88 seconds) and the 100-yard free (58:51 seconds). Also recording a first-place finish was junior Carlos Pardo (Davie, Fla./Hollywood Hills) in the 100-yard back (1:18.94). The men also swept both relay races with Meggas, Astalos, Webster and Degroff combining efforts in the 400-yard medley relay to record a time of 4:25.35. The same team posted a winning time of 3:39.48 in the 400-yard free relay.
The Hiram swim teams will next compete on Saturday, Nov. 19 when the Terriers host Defiance College at Alumni Memorial Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
