GAMBIER, OHIO — The Hiram College swimming and diving teams officially began the 2012-13 season with the annual Kenyon College Relays in Gambier. Both Terriers teams finished seventh overall.
The women finished the event with eight points to place seventh of seven teams. Host school Kenyon won the overall meet with a team total of 118 points. Denison University was second with 112 points and Wittenberg University was third at 61 points.
The top overall finish for the Hiram women was turned in by the team of sophomore Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic), freshman Rachel Patten (Castalia/Margaretta) and sophomore Megan McBratnie (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) who placed 13th in the 1500-yard freestyle relay with a time of 17:45.21. Other top finishes included a 15th-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke relay by the team of sophomore Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic), freshman Marian Bade (Macungie, Pa./The Perkiomen School), sophomore Carly Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) and senior Jessie Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve) with a time of 2:05.25. Daniels, Buckley, Patten and Bade also placed 15th in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:44.66. The team of Bade, sophomore Samantha Polmanteer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley), sophomore Marissa Celeste (Rocky River/Gilmour Academy) and sophomore Megan McBratnie (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) placed 16th in the 200-yard breaststroke relay with a mark of 2:29.58. Gruden, Buckley, Patten and Daniels placed 17th in the 500-yard Crescendo Relay with a time of 5:06.70. Daniels, freshman Lexy Jones (Bedford, Ind./Bedford North Lawrence), McBratnie and sophomore Becca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local) also placed 17th in the 200-yard butterfly relay with a time of 2:06.37. Buckley, Gruden, Patten and Daniels placed 19th in the 200-yard free relay and finished in a time of 1:48.22. Rounding out the top performances was the duo of freshman Lexi Cortes (Cleveland/Lutheran West) and Maggie Barlow (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) who finished fourth in the one-meter diving relay with a point total of 250 points.
The Hiram men did not record a team point to place seventh of seven teams. Denison came in first in the team standings with 150 points. Kenyon was second with 108 points and The College of Wooster was third at 56 points.
The top overall performance for the men was a pair of 14th-place finishes in the 1500-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard individual medley relay. Junior Job Fields (Chillicothe), junior Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) and freshman Alex Ham (Jacksonville, Fla./Mandarin) combined efforts in the 1500-yard freestyle relay to post a time of 17:06.27 while Astalos, Fields, freshman Danny Essel (Euclid) and senior James DeGroff (Cuyahoga Falls) posted a combined time of 4:07.35 in the 400-yard IM relay. Other top finishes included a 15th-place finish by Essel, DeGroff, freshman Christian Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and Astalos in the 200-yard breaststroke relay with a time of 2:08.50. The team of freshman Mark Stanke (Dover), DeGroff, Astalos and junior Job Fields (Chillicothe) placed 17th in the 500-yard cresendo relay after swimming a time of 4:39.32. Rounding out the men’s top times was DeGroff, freshman Chris Boardman (Westlake), Stanke and Astalos came in 17th in the 200-yard free relay in a mark of 1:35.27.
The Hiram swim teams will host Notre Dame (Ohio) College on Friday, Oct. 26 in the home and dual meet opener at Alumni Memorial Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
