The Hiram College swimming and diving teams were defeated by Wittenberg University in a dual meet at Alumni Memorial Pool. The Terrier women lost to the Tigers, 227-60, and the men lost, 225-53.
The top individual efforts for the women were a pair of second-place finishes by junior Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) who finished second in both the 50-meter backstroke (34.95 seconds) and the 100-meter back (1:16.54). Also posting a second-place finish was sophomore Rachel Patten (Castalia/Margaretta) in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 5:00.36. Patten also finished third in the 200-meter free with a mark of 2:23.73. In addition, the Terriers had a host of third-place finishes with freshman Natalie Waple (Bedford) placing third in the 50-meter breaststroke (40.73 seconds), junior Rebecca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local) was third in both the 100-meter butterfly (1:16.86) and the 50-meter fly (33.20 seconds) and junior Carly Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) touched the wall third in the 50-meter free (30.85 seconds).
On the men’s side, the Terriers had one event winner in sophomore Mark Stanke (Dover) who captured the 50-meter free in a time of 26.34 seconds. Stanke also finished third in the 100-meter free (58.44 seconds). Fellow sophomore Danny Essel (Cleveland/Euclid) had a pair of second-place finishes in the 50-meter breast (33.64 seconds) and the 100-meter breast (1:12.45). In addition, senior Job Fields (Chillicothe) rounded out the top finishers with third-place finishes in the 400-meter free (4:48.26) and the 100-meter back (1:09.02).
Hiram will host John Carroll University in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 24 at Alumni Pool in the home finale. The first event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
