Junior Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary’s) scored four goals as the Hiram College men’s lacrosse team topped Wabash (Ind.) 14-9 on Saturday afternoon.
The Terriers improve to 3-7 overall are 1-4 in the NCAC. The Little Giants fall to 1-8, 0-4.
Summers now has a team-high 18 goals on the season. Junior Garet Johnston (Kent/Wooster) added a career-high three goals for Hiram.
Wabash came out strong and scored two times in the first three minutes to build an early 2-0 lead.
Hiram countered with a goal by sophomore Doug Legris (Fairfax, Vt./Bellows Free Academy), but the Little Giants came back with a goal of their own to make the score 3-1 with 10:06 left in the first quarter.
Freshman Nick Rollason (Pickerington/Pickerington North) brought Hiram to within one, 3-2, with a goal at the 6:45 mark.
Wabash would respond yet again, but the Terriers came right back on a goal by freshman Jonah Austin (Tecumseh, Mich.) with exactly one minute left in the first quarter.
The Little Giants struck at the 12:34 mark in the second period to push their lead to 5-3. But Hiram would get goals from junior Chris Lekan (North Olmsted/Holy Name) and Rollason to knot the score at 5-5 at the break.
In the second half, Hiram took control, scoring the first five goals to build a 10-5 lead. Johnston and Summers each scored twice, while Lekan found the back of the net once.
The Little Giants would score the final two goals of the third to cut Hiram’s lead to 10-7 through three quarters of play.
The Terriers scored four consecutive times in the fourth quarter to build a 14-7 lead and put the game away.
Junior Sawyer Lott (Sunbury/Big Walnut) made eight stops for Hiram.
The Terriers outshot the Little Giants 50-32 and also were 6-of-11 in extra man opportunities, compared to just 2-of-8 for Wabash.
Hiram will take the week off and plays next on April 11, when its hosts DePauw (Ind.) at 1 p.m.
