The Class of 2016 got quite the welcome on August 22, 2012, as they were surprised with a flash mob to the summer hit “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen, at their official welcome session.
After moving into their residence halls in the morning, the class gathered together for the first time in Hayden Auditorium at 2 p.m. The welcome session began with President Thomas V. Chema welcoming them and offering advice, and then introducing Dean of Students Eric Riedel.
Riedel, too, offered welcoming words and advice for the class’ upcoming journey. The flash mob began at the conclusion of Riedel’s speech.
“Please accept my welcome to all new students and the Class of 2016,” he said. “This is a special time, and, hey I just met you, and this is crazy. Here’s my number –”
And with that, Orientation Leaders, Resident Assistants, Teaching Assistants and the student life staff broke into a lip sync and dance. President Chema, Dean Riedel, Academic Dean Bob Haak and Associate Dean Ellen Walker, also joined in. The student life staff also played off the songs lyrics, asking students to “call me maybe,” by handing out business cards as they danced down the aisles.
President Chema, a graduate of Harvard University, the first college to create a spin-off of the song, donned a Harvard baseball cap as he joined in.
