This week, we feature Sherman Dean, Director of Admission. Continue to check back for more faculty and staff profiles.
What attracted you to join the Hiram College community?
I initially was introduced to the College by a former Hiram Director of Admission. I was invited to join the staff, and over the next 10 years developed a great affinity for the community.
In your opinion, what is distinctive about Hiram College?
Though it may sound cliché, the people are what set Hiram College apart. From the faculty to the folks in the Dining Hall, the feelings that are conveyed of a “family” make Hiram a wonderful place.
What would you like people to know about you beyond your role here at the college?
I am the husband of a beautiful and talented woman, LaKeshia, and the proud father of three young boys, Sherman, III (15), Nathaniel (12) and Jordan (10). I’m a lifelong Cleveland sports fan, and survivor of the many failures and disappointments that go along with being such.
What is your favorite book and why?
The Talisman by Stephen King. I have a wild and vivid imagination, and this novel allowed me to mentally travel to places similar to those I’ve dreamt of since my childhood.
How would you describe Hiram students?
Hiram students are adventurers. Those who buy in are afforded opportunities to travel the world (literally and figuratively), explore their passions, develop and refine their skills and affect their surroundings.
What is your daily interaction with students?
Day to day I seek to add more students and families to the Hiram community with different ideas and goals, which add to the total “flavor” of Hiram College. I also get to interact with current students daily in and around my office and in the Dining Hall.
What do you enjoy about working at Hiram?
Watching the students develop over four years, and then walk across the stage at graduation, ready to take on the world.
Finish this thought: People at Hiram might be surprised to know that I…
Create my own music. (Strictly as a hobby.)
What opportunities has Hiram offered you as a person?
Hiram College has allowed me to bring my personality to my day to day responsibilities – creating fun videos for prospective students, hosting on campus activities and representing the college on State and National Boards. I can’t thank those supervisors that I’ve had here enough for believing in and trusting me.
What is your favorite aspect of the application process?
This one is easy. I love being able to admit a student and welcome them into the Hiram College family.
