With the sweep, the Terriers improve to 18-9 overall and 7-1 in the NCAC. The Yeow0men fall to 2-20 overall and 0-6 NCAC.
In the first game, both teams were held scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Hiram scored what turned out to be the game’s only run on a RBI single by sophomore utility player Kelsey Cuckler (Barberton). Lane tallied six of her 13 K’s in the final three Oberlin at-bats, including back-to-back strikeouts to end the game and clinch a 1-0 shutout.
At the plate, Hiram was led by Cuckler and Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) who both recorded a pair of hits and finished a perfect two-of-two overall. Cuckler also added the lone RBI. Cooney also recorded two stolen bases which gave her 19 for the season, breaking the previous single-season mark of 17 which Cooney shared with Megan Samuel ’09. Cooney also stole 17 bases as a freshman during the 2009 season.
Lane posted her eighth win of the season after allowing no runs and just one hit to go along with the 13 strikeouts.
In game two, Hiram took control early scoring five runs in the top of the first inning that included a base-clearing single by senior All-NCAC catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield) with bases loaded for an early 5-0 advantage. The Terriers added two more runs in the second with a pair of RBI singles by freshman utility player Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s) and sophomore All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Revere) making the score 7-0. Oberlin cut into the deficit with three runs in the top of the third, but Hiram answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-RBI single by sophomore catcher/infielder Danielle Reddinger (Lorain/Southview) to put the Terriers up 9-3. The Yeowomen crossed home plate twice in the top of the fourth, but Hiram again answered scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame to make the score 13-5. Oberlin would have one final at-bat in the fifth, but could not score any more runs and Hiram went on to win by the final of 13-5 in five innings.
Hiram had 12 hits in game two and was led by Ervin who finished a perfect three-for-three with three runs scored and four RBI. Loyer posted a two-of-three effort with two runs scored and a RBI, while freshman shortstop Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) went two-of-three with two runs scored and two RBI. Rounding out the leading hitters was Reddinger who was two-of-two to go along with three RBI.
Hiram is scheduled to host Denison University on Saturday (Apr. 23) in a NCAC doubleheader at Myrtis E. Herndon Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
