PITTSBURGH, PA.  —  The Hiram College softball team swept Chatham (Pa.) University, 5-0 and 8-4, today (Thursday, Apr. 1) in a non-conference doubleheader in Pittsburgh, Pa.  [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]

With the sweep, the Terriers improve to 9-9 overall while the Cougars are now 4-10 overall for the season.

In game one, Hiram scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.  The Terriers then added another run in the fifth on a RBI-single by freshman Alexandra Singer (Akron/Dayton) to make the score 3-0.  Hiram tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the sixth thanks to another RBI single by Singer and on a wild pitch with bases loaded.  Solid pitching and defense held Chatham scoreless to preserve a 5-0 shutout in game one.

Hiram totaled 10 hits in the game and was led by Singer, senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference pitcher/outfielder Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) and sophomore third baseman Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) who all recorded a pair of hits at the plate.  Singer finished two-of-three with two RBI.  Dropsey and Pike both went two-of-four with Dropsey also scoring a run.

On the mound, Dropsey pitched six shutout innings to claim her fifth win of the season and is now 5-5 overall.  She allowed just four hits and struck out eight batters.  Freshman Sarah Bogdan (Strongsville) came on to pitch an inning of relief allowing no runs on two hits and tallied one strikeout.

In the nightcap, Hiram scored the game’s first run in the top of the first on a RBI-single by junior first baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas).  The Cougars then took the lead with a two-run third inning, making the score 2-1.  The Terriers then evened the score at 2-2 with a run in the fourth and then regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth thanks to a RBI-double by sophomore outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) and would later score on a wild pitch.  But the lead would be short lived as Chatham answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning evening the score at 4-4.  Hiram then took control in the final inning, crossing the plate four times en route to the 8-4 final and the two-game sweep.

Hiram posted 15 hits in game two with Dropsey leading the way going four-of-five with three runs scored.  Smith and freshman Kelcie Cuckler (Barberton) both finished three-of-five with a run scored and a RBI.  Langland and senior second baseman Ashley Crowder (North Lewisburg/Triad) also recorded mult-hit games finishing two-of-four.  Crowder also scored a run while Langland had two RBI.

Junior Alati Gagne (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) started the game and pitched three and two-thirds innings to claim the victory and improve to 2-2 overall.  She allowed just two runs on five hits and had one strikeout.  Junior Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief giving up two runs on two hits and tallied one strikeout.  Dropsey came on to finish the game allowing just a hit and striking out three batters in two and two-thirds innings.
