With the split, the Terriers are now 11-5 overall and the Tomcats are now 2-11 overall for the season.
In game one, Hiram jumped out quickly scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning that was highlighted by a base hit by freshman shortstop Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) with bases loaded that allowed all three runners to score. Neither team would score another run until the bottom of the sixth when the Terriers added their final run on a RBI single by freshman utility player Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s) making the score 6-0. Solid pitching by freshman Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) and sophomore Ashley Hinkle (Parma) helped keep the Tomcats scoreless as Hiram went on to the 6-0 shutout.
Four Hiram players each recorded multiple hits in the win with sophomore first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Dayton) finishing two-of-two and scored a run. Loyer, junior outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) and junior second baseman Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) also each posted a pair of hits. In addition, Loyer added a run scored and a RBI, while Langland also tallied a run scored.
Lane started the game and pitched six innings to pick up her fourth win of the season (4-1 overall). She allowed just three hits and struck out seven batters. Hinkle pitched an inning of relief giving up just a hit and struck out two.
It was a different story for Hiram in game two as Thiel piled up the runs early scoring three in the top of the first inning, two in the second and three more runs in the third to lead 8-0. The Terrier bats struggled in the nightcap, totaling just three hits in the game, and could not score any runs as the Tomcats went on to claim an 8-0 victory in five innings.
Three different players recorded hits for Hiram with Bolanz, Cooney and junior outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) each reaching base safely.
On the mound, Hinkle started the game, but would suffer the loss dropping her to 0-1 on the season. She pitched an inning-and-a-third giving up five runs on five hits and tallied one strikeout. Senior Alati Gagne (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) came on in relief and pitched one inning allowing three runs on three hits. Freshman Lindsay Colasinski (Southgate, Mich/Southgate) pitched the final two and two-thirds innings allowing no runs and two hits while striking out one batter.
