BEREA, OHIO — The Hiram College softball team was shut out by Baldwin-Wallace College, 8-0, in five innings today (Thursday, Apr. 7) in a non-conference single game at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field in Berea. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers are now 11-6 overall and the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-4 overall for the season.
The Yellow Jackets took control early scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added another run in the second to lead 5-0. B-W maintained its five-run margin until the bottom of the fifth when the Yellow Jackets crossed the plate three more times to go up by eight runs ending the game with an 8-0 shutout.
The Hiram bats struggled at the plate, recording just three hits in the game. Sophomore All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Revere), senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference catcher Jena Ervin (Canfield) and junior All-NCAC outfielder Marlene Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) each recorded hits in the game and all finished one-of-two at the plate.
On the mound, freshman Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) started the game and pitched two-thirds of an inning allowing four runs on four hits. Lane was also given the loss and is now 4-2 overall for the year. Senior Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) pitched three-and-a-third innings of relief giving up two runs on three hits and had two strikeouts. Freshman Lindsay Colasinksi (Southgate, Mich./Southgate) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits and tallied two strikeouts.
Hiram is scheduled to play a NCAC doubleheader against Kenyon College on Saturday, Apr. 9 in Gambier. The first game is slated for 1 p.m.
