The Hiram College softball team recorded a pair of victories against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College, 5-2, and Worcester Polytechnical (Mass.) Institute, 4-1, to extend its winning streak to four games and wrap-up its Florida trip to the Gene Cusic Classic.
Against WPI, Hiram (5-1) scored a run in the top of the first and second innings thanks to a RBI double by sophomore All-NCAC outfielder Miranda Wright (Richfield/Revere) and a RBI single by freshman Nicole Hoy (Brunswick) to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. WPI cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Hiram got some breathing room in the seventh with a pair of runs highlighted by a solo homerun by sophomore Angela Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) making the score 4-1 heading into the bottom of the frame. WPI recorded two quick outs but would get a runner on base with a double to extend the inning. Hiram then recorded the final out of the game with an ensuing strikeout to take the 4-1 victory.
Hiram totaled seven hits in the game led by Hoy and Wright with a pair of hits each. Hoy went two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI. Wright finished two-for-four with a RBI. Perella finished the game one-for-one with the homerun in her only plate appearance to go along with the run scored and RBI.
At pitcher, freshman Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) pitched the entire game and got the win. She allowed just the lone run on five hits and struck out four batters in seven innings of work.
