Junior second baseman Angela Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) hit for a pair of homeruns, a double and had a combined five runs batted in, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College softball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Mount Union, 5-4 and 14-11, in Alliance.
In game one, Mount Union (7-5-1) scored a run in the bottom of the first and second innings to lead 2-0 early in the contest. The margin remained two runs until the top of the fourth when Hiram (5-9) accounted for four runs on a two-RBI homerun by Perella, a solo homerun by sophomore pitcherMeghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) and a RBI-double by senior All-Region catcher Jess Bolanz(Randolph/Waterloo) to put the Terriers up, 4-2. The Purple Raiders cut the Hiram lead to run by crossing the plate once in the bottom half of the fourth on a defensive error to make the score 4-3. The difference maker came in the bottom of the sixth when the Purple Raiders connected on a two-run homerun of their own to take a 5-4 lead heading into the final inning. Hiram led off the seventh with a double and would get the runner to third on the next at-bat by way of a sacrifice bunt. But the Terriers would then hit into back-to-back outs stranding the runner at third, resulting in a 5-4 Mount Union victory.
Hiram had six hits in the game with Bolanz being the only multi-hit performer going two-of-three with a run scored and a RBI. Perella finished the game one-of-three with a run scored and two RBI thanks to the two-run homerun.
On the mound, Garland pitched the entire game, going six innings and allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out four batters. She was also credited with the loss and drops to 3-5 overall for the season.
In game two, the two teams combined for 25 runs and 24 base hits. Mount Union took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run homer. Hiram then took advantage of a high-scoring opportunity in the top of the third, crossing the plate seven times that included Perella’s second two-run homerun of the day. The inning would also feature a RBI-double by junior All-North Coast Athletic Conference outfielder Miranda Wright (Richfield/Revere) that resulted in a 7-2 lead for the Terriers. Mount Union got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth and evened the game up at 7-7 with a four-run fourth inning that included a bases clearing triple with bases loaded. Hiram regained the lead with two runs in the fifth, but the Raiders would tally three scores in the their half of the frame to take a 10-9 lead. The Terriers put another two runs on the board in the sixth that included a RBI-double by Perella, but Mount Union responded again in the bottom of the frame, this time scoring four runs to go up, 14-11. The Hiram offense would stall in the top of the seventh with only the third 1-2-3 inning defensively recorded by either team in the game as Mount Union went on to the three-run victory.
Wright led the Hiram hitters with three hits in four at-bats in addition to scoring three runs and a RBI. Perella went two-of-three with two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman pitcher/first basemanBrittany Zajac (Corry, Pa./Corry) rounded out the multi-hitters finishing two-of-four with a run scored and a RBI.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Miller (Kent/Roosevelt) started the game and pitched a total of three innings allowing four runs on five hits and had four strikeouts. She was also given the loss and is now 1-2 overall on the season. Garland came on to pitch an inning in relief giving up six runs on four hits. Zajac pitched two innings allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits and had one strikeout.
Hiram will begin NCAC play when it travels to Granville for a doubleheader against Denison University on Sunday, Mar. 30. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
