The Hiram College softball team lost both games of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Allegheny (Pa.) College, 10-2 (6 inn) and 12-1 (5 inn.), in Meadville, Pa.
In game one, Allegheny (17-16, 9-5 NCAC) took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run homerun. Hiram (12-22, 6-8 NCAC) got on the board with a run in the top of the second on a wild pitch that allowed a Terrier runner to score from third base making the score 3-1. The Gators answered the Terrier run with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to extend the margin back to three runs, 4-1. Allegheny went on to add single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make the score 7-1. Hiram recorded what turned out to be its final run of the game on a bases loaded walk by freshman Jessica Wahl (Akron/Ellet), but no more runs would cross home plate in the inning as the Terriers trailed, 7-2, heading into the bottom of the sixth. Allegheny sealed the victory with three runs in its half of the inning to go up by eight runs and post the 10-2 victory.
Hiram had five hits in game one with sophomore All-NCAC outfielder Miranda Wright (Richfield/Revere) and sophomore Angela Perella (Lyndhurst/Beaumont) both recording two hits. Both finished two-of-three overall and Perella also added a run scored.
On the mound, freshman Meghan Garland (Mineral Ridge) got the start and pitched five innings allowing 10 runs on 11 hits and struck out two batters. Fellow freshman Taylor Miller (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched the final third of an inning giving up no runs on two hits.
In the nightcap, Allegheny struck first with a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning and added three more runs in the second to lead 4-0 after two innings. Hiram scored a run in the third on a RBI ground out by Wright to narrow the gap to 4-1. But the Gators tacked on two more runs in their third inning to extend the margin to 6-1. Allegheny then broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning that included a two-run homer to put the Gators up by the score of 12-1. Hiram began the top of the fifth with a single, but would then record three straight outs putting the eight-run rule into effect resulting in the 12-1 win for Allegheny.
Hiram tallied two hits in the game with Wahl and junior All-NCAC outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s) both reaching safely by way of a base hit. Loyer also scored the team’s only run.
At pitcher, Miller pitched the entire game allowing 12 runs on 11 hits and had five strikeouts.
