ADRIAN, MICH.  —  In a second rain suspended game of the tournament for the Hiram College softball team, sophomore All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Bath/Revere) hit two homeruns, including a three-run walk-off homer in extra innings as the Terriers defeated top-seeded DePauw (Ind.) University, 15-12, in nine innings today (Mon, May 15) in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament hosted by Adrian College in Adrian, Mich.  [Game Stats]

Hiram improves its record to 29-13 overall record and forces a deciding game to claim the NCAA Regional Title with DePauw who is now 30-9-1 for the year.

Hiram got on the board first with a double by Singer that included a defensive error on the play which allowed freshman outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s) to score and make it a 1-0 ballgame.  The game would then turn into a solo homerun slugfest as both teams exchanged solo homers in the second with Hiram’s homerun coming from freshman shortstop Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo) which gave the Terriers a 2-1 edge.  Hiram added another solo blast in the bottom of the third, this time off the bat of junior All-Region utility player Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas), her fifth of the season, padding the lead to 3-1.

DePauw got a run in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Hiram answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning with a solo homerun by freshman All-NCAC pitcher/utility player Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) to make the score 4-2.  The Tigers took all momentum away with a nine-run fifth and moved ahead on the scoreboard with a margin of 11-4.  In the bottom of the inning, Hiram mounted a rally scoring five runs with a pair of defensive errors and a series of walks with bases loaded to pull to within two runs, 11-9.  The game would then be suspended due to rain.

The game resumed on Monday (May 16) and the score remained the same heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.  Hiram would get runners on second and third in the inning, but would have two outs when Singer connected on a double down the left field line scoring both runners and evening the game at 11-11.  The Terriers could not get what would be the game-winning run across homeplate, but would send the game into extras.  DePauw pulled ahead with a run in the top of the eighth, but Hiram rallied again with a solo homerun by Bolanz, her second of the game, to stay alive and tie the game again with the score of 12-12.  Hiram held DePauw scoreless in the the top of the ninth and began the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off single by junior All-NCAC outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad).  Two batters later, Langland hit a single to left field setting up a golden opportunity for Singer with two runners on base.  Singer ended the game with a three-run shot, her second homerun of the game, to give Hiram a 15-12 come-from-behind victory and forced a deciding game with the winner going on to the softball world series.

Both teams hit for a combined 34 hits in the game with each team recording 17 hits.  Hiram was led by Singer who finished four-of-six with two runs scored and five RBI.  Lane finished three-of-four with a pair of runs scored and two RBI.  Four other Terriers each recorded a pair of hits in the win.

On the mound, Lane started the game and would later return to finish the game following the weather suspension yesterday.  She ended up pitching a combined eight and two-thirds innings allowing 11 runs on 16 hits and struck out two batters.  Sophomore Ashley Hinkle (Parma) would come on in relief and allowed a run on one hit.  Junior Amethyst Brigham (Middlefield/Cardinal) pitched a third of an inning giving up no runs and no hits.

Hiram will take on DePauw again in an elmination game with the winner claiming the Adrian Regional Title and a berth to the NCAA Softball World Series.  The game is scheduled to start at 11:20 a.m.
