GRANVILLE, OHIO   —   Sophomore All-Region first baseman Alee Singer (Akron/Revere) hit a two-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning to give the Hiram College softball team a 3-1 win against Ohio Wesleyan University today (Friday, May 6) in  its opening game of the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament hosted by Denison University in Granville.  [Game Stats]

With the win, the Terriers are now 23-11 overall and the Battling Bishops fall to 22-13 overall for the season.

OWU got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead.  Hiram later evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the top of the third on a RBI single by freshman outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s).  The Bishops would threaten to take the lead in the fourth with bases loaded and only one out.  But OWU would hit into a double play to end the inning keeping the score tied at 1-1.  The game remained deadlocked until the top of the sixth inning when Singer connected on her fourth homerun of the season with a two-run shot to put the Terriers up 3-1.  OWU made three consecutive outs in the bottom of the inning and would have a runner on second base in the seventh, but failed to get any runs across homeplate as Hiram went on to win by the final of 3-1.

Despite being outhit, 9-5, in the game, Hiram was led at the plate by Loyer who finished two-of-four with a run scored and a RBI.  Four other Terriers each recorded a base hit in the win, including Singer who went one-of-three with a run scored and two RBI.

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo) went the distance for the Terriers to pick up the win and improves to 11-6 overall.  She allowed just the lone run on nine hits and struck out five batters in seven innings of work.

Hiram’s next game will be against the winner of the top-seeded Denison and fourth-seeded Wittenberg University matchup later today at approximately 2 p.m.  The winner of that game will advance to the championship round tomorrow (Saturday, May 7) in Granville.
