Shishir Adhikari ’11 and Associate Professor of Physics Mark Taylor have published the article “Conformation of a flexible chain in explicit solvent: Exact solvation potentials for short Lennard-Jones chains,” in “The Journal of Chemical Physics” (vol. 135, article 044903).
“The article discusses the conformation or shape of a polymer chain molecule in solution. Chain conformation is an important factor controlling both the physical properties of polymeric materials and the functionality of biopolymers,” Taylor explains.
The recent work of Taylor and his students (funded by the National Science Foundation) has focused on developing a theoretical understanding of the coupling between the conformation of a polymer chain and the local structure the chain’s solvent environment.
