If the weather cooperates, organizers of the Hiram Relay for Life hope to raise more money for cancer research than last year’s record-setting event.
This year’s Relay For Life benefitting cancer research will be a 24-hour marathon beginning Saturday May 5 at 10 a.m. and continuing until 10 a.m. the next day. Organizers expect about 250 participants on 21 teams to walk the Hiram track during the benefit, and hope many more will come to support the teams.
This year’s theme is ‘Celebrations Around the World’, because cancer affects everyone in every country, and was expanded to 24 hours because cancer never sleeps, according to Roseann Zychowski, ’13, who, with her sister Jamie, ’12, and Zach Fincham, ’13, are leading the committee of students organizing the Relay.
As last year, participants form teams to take turns walking the track, and one member of each team must be walking at all times during the 24-hours.
The area surrounding the track will be transformed into a campground for the overnight event, where teammates can gather when not walking, and there will be a wide array of activities and attractions to occupy their time.
The relay organizers hope to surpass last year’s event that raised $32,500 for cancer research, and had more than 500 participants.
A wide range of activities are slated too, to keep visitors and team members occupied non-stop, including a hot air balloon, inflatable games, a corn hole tournament, a “Minute-to-Win-It challenge, and a lumineria ceremony. Individual teams will be staging their own fund raisers for non-team visitors. There will be a survivors brunch at 11 am Saturday and all survivors and caregivers are welcome.
