Hiram College

Sophomore guard Josh Edmondson (Euclid/Twinsburg) scored a team-high 15 points, but it would not be enough as Hiram fell to Oberlin, 59-50.

The Hiram College men’s basketball team shot just 25.9 percent in the second half resulting in a 59-50 loss against Oberlin College in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Oberlin.

Oberlin (7-17, 5-10 NCAC) led in the early minutes of the first half, but Hiram (11-13, 5-10) eventually overtook the lead and led by as many as seven points, 15-8, at the 12:17 minute mark thanks to a three-pointer by sophomore guard Josh Edmondson (Euclid/Twinsburg) as part of an 8-2 scoring run.  The Terriers maintained the lead for the majority of the remainder of the half, despite the Yeomen battling back to tie the game on two occasions, including a 23-23 score with 2:48 left before halftime.  Oberlin took the lead just over a minute later on a triple and had a slim 26-25 advantage at the intermission.

In the second half, Oberlin began the period with an 11-3 run to increase the margin to nine points, 37-28, with 12:28 left to play.  Still trailing by nine points, 39-30, at the 10:42 mark, the Hiram offense then went cold allowing the Yeomen to take command of the game with a 10-0 run that lasted 4:52 extending the margin to 17 points, 47-30, with 6:21 to go.  The Terriers narrowed the gap to single digits and got to within six points, 54-48, following a pair of free-throws by Edmondson with just under a minute remaining.  But the rally was too late and the earlier deficit to large for Hiram to overcome as Oberlin went on to win by the final of 59-50.

Oberlin shot 39.5 percent (17-of-43) for the game and had four players score in double figures.  Geoff Simpson led the way with a game-high 18 points on six-of-nine shooting (66.7 percent).  Austin Little was second with 14 points and Andrew Fox had 13 points in addition to grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.  Rounding out the high scorers for the Yeomen was Emmanuel Lewis with 10 points.

Hiram finished the game shooting 32.7 percent (18-of-55) and was led in scoring by Edmondson with 15 points on four-of-10 shooting (40.0 percent).  He was joined by freshman forward Riley Moore (Grafton/Midview) with 14 points and senior guard Alan Sheppard(Wadsworth) added 11 points.

Hiram will wrap-up the 2012-13 regular season when it hosts Wittenberg University in a NCAC matchup at Price Gymnasium on Saturday, Feb. 16.  It will be senior day and will also be part of a basketball doubleheader with the Terrier women’s team. The women will take on Denison University at 2 p.m., followed by the men against the Tigers at 4 p.m.
