Students cooked up gourmet dishes and a healthy dose of competition at the Platinum Chef competition on Feb. 27, 2014.
This year marked the fourth annual competition. Teams of students, paired with an AVI Fresh chef, faced off against one another for the title Platinum Chef Hiram. They had approximately an hour and a half to prepare an appetizer, entree and dessert, and were instructed to incorporate the secret ingredient of beans.
Last year’s reigning champs, Jake Sellstrom ’16, Elliot Lopes ’14, Shova Ale Magar ’14, Luana Correia ’14 and James Louive ’15, defended their title and took home first place. Judges Liz Okuma, associate vice president and dean of student life, Alex Ulbricht, director of campus involvement and student Jeremy Kerola, said this year’s competition was one of the closest since the competition began, and each dish was a standout.
The winning team will face off against other Ohio colleges at Malone University in April, for a chance to win $2,500.
