WAYNESBURG, PA. — The Hiram College men’s soccer team was defeated by Waynesburg University, 3-2, tonight (Thursday, Sept. 30) in a non-conference game in Waynesburg, Pa. [Game Stats]
Following tonight’s game, the Terriers are now 4-7 overall. Waynesburg improves to 5-5-1 overall for the season.
Waynesburg struck early, needing only 1:20 to record its first goal of the game with an unassisted score by Erick Burke for a 1-0 lead. Hiram then tallied the game’s next two goals beginning with a score at the 19:42 minute mark from senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Petar Knezevic (Akron/Ellet), his team-leading seventh goal of the season, to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore defender Daniel O’Callaghan (Aberdare, Wales, United Kingdom) was credited with an assist. The Terriers later took the lead with an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Ryan Minick (North Royalton) during the 30th minute, making the score 2-1 and giving Hiram a one-goal edge at halftime.
Waynesburg found the back of the net on two occassions in the second half, beginning with a goal at the 47:43 mark by Danny Griebert to even the score at 2-2. Waynesburg then tallied what would become the game-winning goal during the 76th minute off the foot of Simseth St.-Hillion giving the Yellow Jackets a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.
In goal for Hiram, sophomore Joe Rottinger (Strongsville) got the start and played all 90 minutes, but was given the loss and is now 1-1 overall this season. He allowed three goals and made two saves.
Hiram will resume its NCAC schedule when it hosts Allegheny (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
