The Hiram College men’s soccer team fell, 5-2, against Geneva (Pa.) College in a non-conference game as part of the Carnegie (Pa.) Mellon University DoubleTree Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Geneva (1-1) struck first with a goal off of a deflection at the 7:51 minute mark of the first half to grab the early lead. Hiram (0-2) evened the score at 1-1 during the 16th minute when junior Zaire Morrison (Boardman) found the back of the net on a corner kick by sophomore Richard Webb(Alicante, Spain/Laude Lady Elizabeth School). The two goals would be all the scoring in the opening period as the two teams went to the locker rooms deadlocked at 1-1.
In the second half, the Golden Tornadoes took control scoring four unanswered goals beginning with a score just 3:20 into the period to regain the lead, 2-1. Geneva added three more goals during the 52nd, 57th and 79th minutes to pad the lead to 5-1. Hiram tallied the final score of the game at the 79:40 mark when freshman Cory Weddington (Twinsburg) recorded his first collegiate goal with assists from Morrison and sophomore Tanner Mathews (Alliance/Marlington). But the goal would come a little too late as Geneva went on to claim the 5-2 victory.
