HIRAM, OHIO — A pair of “own goals” allowed would be the difference maker as the Hiram College men’s soccer team fell to Wabash (Ind.) College, 3-2, today (Saturday, Oct. 22) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Charles A. Henry Field on Senior Day. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 8-5-1 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC. The Little Giants improve to 8-7-2 overall and 3-4 NCAC.
Wabash scored its first goal of the game just 6:09 into the contest on a failed clear attempt by Hiram that found its way into the back of the Terrier goal giving the Little Giants an early 1-0 lead. In the final seconds of the period, Wabash increased the lead with a marker by Blake Jennings at the 44:45 mark, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Little Giants at halftime.
Hiram cut the lead in half during the 75th minute on a penalty kick by junior All-NCAC forward Ryan Minick (North Royalton) cutting the deficit to 2-1. The lead would grow back to two scores on a second “own goal” allowed by Hiram at the 75:53 mark for a 3-1 Wabash advantage. The Terriers looked to rally one more time when junior midfielder Ty Smith (Rocky River/St. Ignatius) scored a goal with assists from junior All-NCAC midfielder Ryan Greenhill (Solon) and junior defenseman Daniel O’Callaghan (Aberdare, Wales, United Kingdom) to pull Hiram to within a goal at 3-2 during the 84th minute. But the Terriers could not record the game-tying goal in the final minutes despite outshooting Wabash, 23-9, in the game as the Little Giants held on for a 3-2 victory.
Junior Joe Rottinger (Strongsville) played all 90 minutes for Hiram allowing three goals and made two saves. Rottinger is now 8-5-1 overall for the season with the loss.
Hiram will host The College of Wooster on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the regular-season home finale at Henry Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
