Sophomore midfielder Andres Ruiz (Georgetown/Cayman Islands) scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win against DePauw (Ind.) University at the Charles A. Henry Field on Homecoming.
With the win, the Terriers remain undefeated with an 8-0 overall record and are 1-0 in the NCAC. The Tigers fall to 5-1-2 overall and 1-1 NCAC.
Both teams combined for four goals in the first half, but it was Hiram who struck first when senior All-Region forward Ryan Minick (North Royalton) scored at the 21:02 minute mark with an assist from junior midfielder Andy Harding (Bath/Revere) to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. DePauw recorded the next two goals from Nate Snyder during the 34th minute and Andy Morrison during the 39th minute as the Tigers took over the lead, 2-1. Hiram netted the game-tying goal just before the end of the half, when junior defenseman Brian Zilla (Canton/Jackson) found the back of the net at the 42:17 mark with an assist from Andres Ruiz to deadlock the game at 2-2 at the break.
In the second half, Andres Ruiz scored what would turn out to be the game winner during the 58th minute that put the Terriers up, 3-2. Minick was credited with the assist on the goal. Strong defensive play kept DePauw scoreless in the final minutes as Hiram went on to claim the one-goal victory.
Senior All-NCAC goalkeeper Joe Rottinger (Strongsville) played all 90 minutes in net and got his sixth victory of the season to improve to 6-0 overall. He allowed two goals and recorded four saves.
Hiram will next travel to Latrobe, Pa. for a non-conference game against St. Vincent College on Tuesday, Sept. 25. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
