The Hiram College men’s lacrosse team opened the 2015 campaign with a 12-5 loss at Thiel (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Terriers are now 0-1 on the season, while the Tomcats improve to 1-1.
Freshman Nick Rollason (Pickingerton/Pickerington North) paced the Hiram offense with four goals.
Thiel came out of the gate and gained control of the contest early. The Tomcats scored four goals, including two in the final 16 seconds of the first quarter, to build a 4-0 lead.
The Terriers would get on the board at the 11:18 mark of the second quarter, when junior Greg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary’s) found the back of the net.
The Tomcats would score three more times in the quarter and took a 7-1 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, Thiel scored to make the score 8-1, before Summers fed Rollason who found the back of the net for his first career goal, with 8:55 remaining in the quarter.
The Tomcats would score two more times to build a 10-2 lead.
Rollason would then score at the 6:37 mark of the third, with Summers picking up the assist. He added another goal with 3:26 left in the third quarter, taking a pass from sophomore Doug Legris (Fairfax, Vt./Bellows Free Academcy) and scoring, trimming the Tomcats lead to 10-4.
Thiel would score two more times, before Rollason added another man-up goal with just under nine minutes to play.
Thiel outshot Hiram 51-24 in the contest.
Hiram will continue its season opening five-game road trip on Saturday, when it visits Bethany (W. Va.). Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
