Hiram fans of all ages celebrated their Terrier pride at Homecoming on Sept. 20, 2014.
The day kicked off with the annual Run for Grace and Andy. The run, now in its eighth year, commemorates Hiram students Grace Chamberlain and Andy Hopkins, who were killed by a drunken driver in 2006.
Following the race, alumni and students spent the morning tailgating in anticipation of the football match-up between Hiram and Allegheny College (Pa.). Also prior to the game, eight alumni were inducted into the William H. Hollinger Athletics Hall of Fame.
At halftime, seniors Joshua Turner and Shirjoma Jacobs were crowned Mr. and Miss Hiram.
Turner, a sociology major from Cleveland, is president of Phi Gamma Epsilon and a teaching assistant for the First Year Colloquium, “Sociology of Love, Sex and Relationships.” He is a student ambassador, secretary of the sociology club and a member of PRYSM and Social Justice Warriors. He considers himself to be “a nomad with an education.”
Jacobs, a biomedical humanities major from Maple Heights, plays on the volleyball team. She is a member of the Terrier Activities Board, Hip Hop Terriers, Athletes in Action and B. Original. She “can break two-and-a-half inch boards with my head” and loves to “sing, dance, eat, hang out with friends and family and do taekwondo.”
Other students represented on Homecoming Court included:
- Freshmen Heidi Wiegand and Michael Skizenta
- Sophomores Bailey Norton and Alan Fink
- Juniors Faith Lemon and Danny Essel
- Seniors Alys Dutton, Emily Moore, James Louive and Matt Moore
The football teams played a close back-and-forth game, but it ultimately ended in a loss for Hiram, 24-21.
