Institute Week marks the beginning of a four-year journey for the incoming freshman class. That journey will begin for the Class of 2016 on August 22 as they are officially welcomed to campus as freshmen for the first time.
New Student Institute, August 22-26, 2012, is designed to introduce freshmen to campus life and academic programs at Hiram College. Throughout the week, both commuter and residential students have the opportunity to meet faculty advisers, teaching assistants, their Colloquium class, residence hall staff and fellow classmates.
A range of programming, including recreational activities, speakers and social events, will give the new class an opportunity to become united before classes officially begin on August 27. Highlights of the week include PLAYFAIR (8 p.m. on Aug. 22 at Martin Field House in the Coleman Center), a team-building event focused on developing unity and school spirit; Judson Laipply’s Evolution of Dance (8 p.m. on Aug. 23 at Hayden Auditorium in Bates Hall), a performance of the Evolution of Dance and presentation about transitioning to college; Rhythmic Motivation Drum Circle (11:30 a.m. on Aug. 24 at Martin Common, rain location Martin Field House), an interactive group music exercise that builds connections, deepens listening skills and reduces stress; Colloquium Dodge Ball (10 p.m. on Aug. 24 at Martin Field House in the Coleman Center), a competition between Colloquium and WSEM classes, with awards given to the champion and most spirited team; and the longstanding Hiram tradition, Dinner and Square Dance (5 p.m. on Aug. 25 on Henry Field, rain location Martin Field House), where food and square dancing will bring together the new class. A Variety Show will wrap up the weekend on Aug. 26 at 8 p.m., where students can show off their talents on stage at Hayden Auditorium.
