Hiram College

The Dining Hall brought a little bit of home to students’ plates on Sunday, Nov. 21, as Dining Services held its first “Home for the Holidays” event.

Led by executive chef Mike Ballas and catering director Adam Ligo, the goal was to create a home-like atmosphere for the students. Instead of the usual tables for 4-6, tables were rearranged for 8-12, including one set for 28 cross country runners.

Each table was served family-style, featuring a whole turkey and all of the traditional Thanksgiving side dishes. One student at each table was given a chef’s hat along with the duty of “official turkey carver.”  This was a first for many of them; therefore, culinary staff were close at hand to provide guidance.

The Dining Hall was decorated like a fall banquet room, with centerpieces on each table, set up using individual gift bags for the students to take home. Each had a loaf of bread and strawberry jam, baked by Diane McBride.

Approximately 250 people attended, and the Dining Services staff hopes it will become an annual event. AVI Fresh will host a Holiday Party on from 4:30-8 p.m. on Dec. 14 in the Dining Hall. For reservations, contact Ligo at ligoak@hiram.edu.
