GREENCASTLE, IND. — The Hiram College volleyball team came away with a two-match split losing to North Coast Athletic Conference opponent DePauw (Ind.) University, 3-0, but defeating Franklin (Ind.) College, 3-0, in a non-conference matchup.
With the split, the Terriers are now 22-6 overall and 6-2 in the NCAC.
In the match against DePauw, the Tigers defeated the Terriers by the scores of 25-18, 25-18, 25-18. Leading the Hiram offense was sophomore middle hitter Shirjoma Jacobs (Maple Heights) with seven kills. Sophomore right-side Jennifer Yardas (Moon, Twp., Pa./Moon) was second with six kills. Sophomore setter Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) tallied a team-best 30 assists.
Defensively, junior libero Danielle Day (Newbury) recorded 29 digs, followed by freshman Kayla Bartlett (Guysville/Alexander) with eight digs. Jacobs also led the team in blocks with five (two solo and three assists).
Against Franklin, the Terriers won in straight sets by the scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-23. Junior outside hitter Ashley Venable (Youngstown/Liberty) and freshman middle hitter Emily Mortimer (Mogadore/Field) both tallied 11 kills to lead the offense. Moore set up the offense with 41 assists and Mortimer also posted a team-high three service aces.
Day led the team defensively with 19 digs, while Jacobs led the team in blocks (one solo and three assists). Mortimer also added three blocks.
Hiram will wrap-up the 2012 regular season next weekend when it travels to Fredonia, N.Y. for a non-conference tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Terriers will take on Ithaca (N.Y.) College in their first match at 1 p.m., followed by a matchup against SUNY-Fredonia at 3 p.m.
