UNIVERSITY CIRCLE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team defeated St. Mary’s (Ind.) College, 3-1, today (Sunday, Aug. 31) on the final day of the Case Classic in University Circle. [Game Stats]
The Terriers claimed their first win of the season and are now 1-1 overall. The Belles fall to 0-2.
St. Mary’s struck first with a goal at the 10:16 minute mark to take an early 1-0 lead. Hiram then tallied three straight goals including a score by junior forward/midfielder Ashley Ellsworth (Strongsville) during the 30th minute of the first period to tie the game at 1-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the game looked to be headed to overtime with the score remaining 1-1 until a pair of late goals scored by junior midfielder/forward Grace Heffernan (Kent/Rosevelt) during the 83rd minute and a marker by sophomore forward Natalie Green (Madison) at the 85:16 minute mark to secure the 3-1 victory. The goal by Heffernan was unassisted and would be the game winner. Green’s goal was assisted by sophomore forward Claire Conner (Aurora).
In goal, sophomore Emily Bristol (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester Central) picked up her first win of the season playing all 90 minutes allowing the lone goal and making five saves on 13 shots faced.
Hiram will look to keep the momentum going next Sunday (Sept. 7) when it hosts Defiance College in the home opener at the Hiram Soccer Complex. Gametime is scheduled for 2 p.m.
