UNIVERSITY CIRCLE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team was defeated by St. Vincent (Pa.) College, 3-1, today (Saturday, Aug. 30) in the first game of the Case Classic in University Circle. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers are 0-1 to begin the season while the Bearcats open the year 1-0.
Both teams remained tied at 0-0 at halftime despite a silght edge in favor of the Terriers in shots, 8-5. Nearing the midway point of the second half, junior forward/midfielder Ashley Ellsworth (Strongsville) put Hiram on the board with a goal at the 57:53 minute mark, with an assist from junior defenseman Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale), giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Hiram maintained the 1-0 advantage until the 66th minute when St. Vincent tied the game at 1-1 as part of what would be three unanswered goals. The Bearcats struck again at the 68:28 minute mark to take a 2-1 lead and would secure the victory with an insurance goal during the 85th minute en route to the 3-1 victory.
In goal, sophomore Emily Bristol (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester) played all 90 minutes for Hiram facing eight shots and making five saves.
Hiram will look to rebound from today with the second and final game of the Case Classic tomorrow (Sunday, Aug. 31) against St. Mary’s (Ind.) College. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
