The Hiram College softball team lost a pair of games against Mount Union College today (Monday, Apr. 21) in a non-conference doubleheader at the Myrtis E. Herndon Field. The Terriers lost the first game, 9-1, and lost the second game, 11-7. [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]
In game one, Mount Union (29-7) got out to an early lead scoring three runs in the top of the first and added a pair runs in the second and one in the third and fourth innings to lead, 7-0. Hiram’s (10-18) only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI double by junior second baseman Rosie Frank (Strongsville/Parma Heights Holy Name) making the score 7-1. The Purple Raiders added two insurance runs in the sixth en route to the 9-1 final.
Junior All-NCAC shortstop Stephanie Zunic (Canfield) tallied two of the Hiram four hits in the game and finished two-of-three overall.
On the mound, freshman Alati Gagne (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) started the game, but was handed her fifth loss of the season dropping her to 0-5 for the year. In four innings, she allowed seven runs on 10 hits and had one strikeout. Senior Jamie Brown (Louisville) pitched two innings of relief giving up two runs on four hits.
In the nightcap, the Purple Raiders again took an early lead with runs in the first and second innings taking a 2-0 advantage. Hiram tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-RBI single by Zunic and later took the lead with a RBI double by senior All-NCAC catcher Mindy Miller (Navarre/Waynedale) in the third making the score 3-2. Mount Union crossed the plate four times in the fifth to regain the lead, 6-3. The Terriers responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning that included a two-RBI double by Miller tying the game at 6-6. The Raiders added two runs in the sixthand Hiram tallied a run in the bottom of the inning resulting in an 8-7 margin heading into the final inning. Mount Union took the lead for good in the seventh with three runsto goon to the 11-7 victory.
Hiram recorded 12 hits for the game and was led by Miller who finished three-of-four with a run scored and three RBI. Zunic, junior All-NCAC first baseman Chastine Romanello (Phoenix, Ariz./Barry Goldwater) and Frank all recorded a pair of hits.
Freshman pitcher Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) got the start and pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing six runs on eight hits and struck out two batters. Browncame on the fifth and pitched two innings suffering her third loss of the season, now 4-3 overall, giving up five runs on eight hits. Gagne pitched a third of an inning allowing one hit.
Hiram will resume North Coast Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Apr. 24 when it travels to Oberlin College. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
