The Hiram College softball team earned a two-game split against Wittenberg University today (Sunday, Apr. 20) in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Myrtis E. Herndon Field. The Terriers won the first game, 3-0, but lost the second game, 7-2. [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]
In the first game, Hiram (10-16, 4-6 NCAC) scored the first run of the game on a RBI triple by junior All-NCAC first baseman Chastine Romanello (Phoenix, Ariz./Barry Goldwater) in the bottom of the first inning giving the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. Hiram tallied another run in the second thanks to a RBI single by junior second baseman Rosie Frank (Strongsville/Parma Heights Holy Name) extending the lead to 2-0. The Terriers scored the final run of the game in the fifth on a RBI fielder’s choice by senior All-NCAC catcher Mindy Miller (Navarre/Waynedale) en route to the 3-0 victory.
At the plate, junior All-NCAC utility player Heidi Gipson (Canal Fulton/Northwest) led the Hiram hitters with a perfect two-of-two performance.
Sophomore Whitney Dropsey (Ashland/Hillsdale) went the distance on the mound to record her second win of the season, 2-0 overall, and first shutout victory, allowing just three hits and struck out six batters.
In game two, Wittenberg (21-11, 7-5 NCAC) jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the first inning giving the Tigers a 4-0 advantage. Hiram scored a run on a RBI double by Romanello cutting the deficit to 4-1. The Tigers extended their lead with a pair of runs in third and a run in the sixth making the score 7-1. The Terriers scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double by Frank, but it would not be enough as Wittenberg went onto capture game two by the final of 7-2.
Frank, Dropsey and junior All-NCAC shortstop Stephanie Zunic (Canfield) each recorded a team-high two hits. Frank finished a perfect two-of-two with a RBI. Dropsey andZunic both went two-of-four at the plate with Dropsey adding a run scored.
On the mound, Dropsey made her second straight start, but allowed three runs on four hits with one strikeout in one inning and was given her first loss of the season dropping her to 2-1 overall. Senior Jamie Brown (Louisville) came on in the second and pitched one and two-thirds innings of relief giving up two runs on three hits.Freshman Sarah Padilla (Ontario, Calif./Colony) pitched the final four-and-a-third innings allowing one run on six hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Hiram will play its third doubleheader in as many days when it hosts non-conference opponent Mount Union College tomorrow (Monday, Apr. 21) at Herndon Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
