UNIVERSITY CIRCLE, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s soccer team defeated Bethany (W.Va.) College, 3-2, today (Saturday, Aug. 30) in the season opener and the first game of the Case Classic in University Circle. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers begin the 2008 season 1-0, while the Bison are 0-1.
Hiram struck early in the first half with an unassisted goal from junior Philip Major (Walnut Creek/Berlin Hiland) at the 6:26 minute mark giving the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Bethany came back to tie the game during the 35th minute knotting the game at 1-1. Neither team scored in the final minutes of the half, keeping the game deadlocked at 1-1 at the intermission.
The Terriers regained the lead just over a minute into the second period thanks to a goal by junior midfielder Matt Urban (Hudson) on a penalty kick making the score 2-1. The Bison again found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2 at the 53:51 minute mark. Just before the midway point of the second half, Hiram sophomore forward Petar Knezevic (Akron/Ellet) gave the Terriers the lead again with what would later turn out to be the game winning goal, with an assist from Major, during the 69th minute as Hiram went on to win by the final of 3-2.
In goal for Hiram, senior Nate Rausch (Cuyahoga Falls) played all 90 minutes to claim his first win of the season (1-0 overall) facing six shots and making four saves.
Hiram will seek its second win of the season tomorrow (Sunday, Aug. 31) when it faces St. Vincent (Pa.) College in its final game of the Case Classic in University Circle. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
