The Hiram College baseball team split a pair of games against Case this afternoon (Saturday, Apr. 5) in a non-conference doubleheader at Nobby’s Ballpark in University Circle. The Terriers defeated the Spartans, 7-4, in eight innings, but fell short in the nightcap, 4-3. [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]
In game one, Hiram (5-8) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning scoring runs on a sacrifice flyout by senior All-NCAC infielder Frank Liscio (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Port St. Lucie) and a RBI groundout by junior All-NCAC outfielder Craig Dobos (Warren/Howland). Case (4-14-1) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Terriers regained the lead in the third with a pair of RBIs from freshman infielder Cody Fincham (Windham) and Liscio to take a 4-2 advantage. The Spartans rallied again with runs in the fifth and seventh to tie the game at 4-4 and send the game into extra innings. Hiram tallied three runs in the top of the eighth with RBI doubles by junior outfielder Mark Reifsnyder (Tallmadge) and sophomore infielder Anthony Maruca (Warren/Champion) giving the Terriers a 7-4 lead. The Spartans got their lead-off hitter on base, but then recorded three consecutive outs as Hiram held on for the 7-4 final.
Fincham led the Terrier hitters with a pair of hits (two-of-three overall) with a pair of runs scored and a RBI. Liscio finished one-of-three with a run scored and two RBI. Marucaonly hit was the two-run double in the eighth and finished one-of-four overall with a pair of RBIs.
On the mound, sophomore Jeff Papesh (Garfield Heights) started the game and pitched seven innings allowing four runs on seven hits and struck out four batters. Senior Kris Immel (Wooster) came on in relief to pitch the eighth inningand pickup the winto improve to 1-0 for the season, allowing no runs or hits and tallying one strikeout.
In the second game, Case led 3-0 after three innings of play. Hiram recorded three runs in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI double by Liscio, his fourth RBI overall for the day, and a RBI single by Reifsnyder to tie the game at 3-3. The Spartans led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and that was followed by a RBI triple to score what would be the game-winning run as Case went on to win by the final of 4-3.
Seven Terrier players each recorded a hit led by Liscio who went one-of-three with a run scored and two RBI.
Sophomore Jeremy Barchie (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) went the distance for Hiram pitching all six innings, but suffered his third loss of the season and is now 1-3 overall. He allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out four batters.
Hiram is scheduled to play a non-conference doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday, Apr.6) against Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
