Hiram College

CLEVELAND, OHIO  —   The Hiram College football team was selected to finish ninth in the 2012 North Coast Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll that was released today (Monday, Aug. 6).  [2012 NCAC Preseason Coaches Poll]

The Terriers had 16 points to place ninth of 10 teams in this season’s poll.  Defending NCAC Champion Wabash (Ind.) College was picked to repeat as champion with 98 points and nine of 10 first-place votes.  Wittenberg University was tabbed second with 90 points, including one first-place vote, while conference newcomer DePauw (Ind.) University rounded out the top-three schools with 72 points.

Offensively this fall, the Terriers return 22 lettermen and four starters.  Junior wide receiver Richard Simpson (Kissimmee, Fla./Gateway) is the team’s leading returning player statistically after leading Hiram in receptions (39), yards (359) and touchdowns (three) last season as a sophomore.  Also back this fall is senior quarterback Brendan Rehor (Bay Village/Bay) who missed all of last year due to injury in the offseason.  Prior to his injury, Rehor set two single-season records for pass completions (222) and attempts (364).  He finished sixth in the NCAC in passing yardage (1,910) to go along with 10 TD.  He accounted for 2,085 yards of the team’s 2,932 yards of total offense in 2010.

Defensively, Hiram will have the most holes to fill as the Terriers lose 15 lettermen and seven starters, including All-NCAC linebackers Oliver Dickerhoof and Jon Hull.  Dickerhoof and Hull finished first and second on the team in tackles with 111 and 101 stops respectively.  Of the returning veterans, look for defensive backs Josh Peacock (Carson City, Nev./Carson), Dominick Harper (Akron/Kenmore) and lineman Mario Lemuel (Suwanee, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) to be the leaders.  Peacock posted 84 tackles last season, while Harper added 76 tackles.  Lemuel led the team and was fourth in the NCAC in sacks with seven.

Hiram opens the 2012 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 when it travels to New Wilmington, Pa. for a non-conference matchup against Westminster College.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
