CLEVELAND, OHIO — The Hiram College football team was picked to finish ninth in this year’s North Coast Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll that was released today (Wednesday, Aug. 4). [2010 NCAC Preseason Coaches Poll] [2010 NCAC Football Media Guide]
Hiram received 14 points to place ninth of nine teams. Defending conference champion Wittenberg University was selected to repeat as champion this fall with 79 points and received eight of nine first-place votes. Wabash (Ind.) College was second with 71 points and one first-place vote, while Allegheny (Pa.) College rounds out the top three with 63 points.
The Hiram College football team will begin a new era in 2010 led by first-year Head Coach Randy Moore.
Hiram will return 15 starters from a year ago including senior All-NCAC wide receiver Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) on offense and two-time All-NCAC junior linebacker Jon Hull (Buford, Ga./Mill Creek) on defense. Campbell accounted for 900 of the team’s 2,298 yards of total offense in 2009 seeing playing time as a wide receiver, quarterback and on special teams. He led the team in receiving touchdowns (four) and was second in yards (480). In addition, he was the team’s top kick returner with 290 yards in a team-tying best 17 attempts (17.1 yards per return).
Hull led the Terriers in tackles for the second straight season with 77 stops (21 solo and 56 assists). He also tallied 2.5 tackles for a loss of seven yards. In addition, Hull had one interception, a fumble recovery and a team-tying high three pass breakups.
Hiram will open the season at home against non-conference opponent Westminster (Pa.) College on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Charles A. Henry Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
