MEADVILLE, PA. — The Hiram College football team lost to Allegheny (Pa.) College, 44-14, today (Saturday, Nov. 5) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Frank B. Fuhrer Field in Meadville, Pa. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC. The Gators improve to 5-4 overall and 3-2 NCAC.
Allegheny wasted no time in grabbing the early lead, scoring 46 seconds into the game on two plays which ended in a five-yard touchdown run by Brian Tamburlin that was set up by a 48-yard opening kickoff return by Blake Lyle. Following a three-and-out by Hiram on its first drive, Allegheny struck again on another quick two-play drive that was capped by a 62-yard TD completion from quarterback Jordon Fowler to Matt Griffith to extend the lead to 14-0 with 11:58 left to play in the first quarter. The Gators ended the scoring in the opening period with a third straight scoring drive the ended in another TD completion from Fowler to Griffith from six yards out to make the score 21-0 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the duo of Fowler and Griffith would hook up again on a four-yard TD strike at the 11:37 mark resulting in a comfortable 28-0 margin for the Gators. Hiram got on the board on its ensuing possession thanks to a two-yard TD run by sophomore quarterback Brandon Hanna (Ashtabula/Lakeside) that capped a 16-play, 74-yard drive and lasted 8:28. But the Terriers would still trail 28-7 at the break.
Allegheny recorded the only points of the third quarter on a three-play scoring drive highlighted by a 40-yard scamper by Fowler that set up a five-yard TD run by Brian Tamburlin to give the Gators a 35-7 edge.
Both teams would combine for 16 points in the final quarter with all of Allegheny’s points coming on three field goals by Ryan Zipf of 43, 25 and 23 yards. The Terriers scored the final points of the game on a 26-yard TD completion from Hanna to senior wide receiver Shaun Zalewski (Cleveland/St. Edward) with 22 seconds remaining in the game. But the Gators had the game well in hand with the final of 44-14.
Allegheny ended the game with 473 yards of total offense (239 rushing and 234 passing) and was led by Fowler who completed 17-of-25 passes for 234 yards with three scores. He also rushed for 46 yards on three carries. Running back Ben Perko rushed for a game-high 96 yards in 15 attempts. Griffith finished the game with game-highs of five catches for 116 yards and two scores. Defensively, William Devlin led the way with six tackles (three solo and three assists).
Hiram totaled 167 yards of offense (73 rushing and 94 passing) and was led by Hanna who completed 10-of-30 passes for 94 yards and a TD. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 29 yards on 12 carries and a TD. Zalewski led all Terrier receivers with two catches for 34 yards and a TD. Defensively, senior defensive back Dominick Harper (Akron/Kenmore) recorded a game and career-high 17 tackles (10 solo and seven assists).
Hiram will host Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, Nov. 12 in a NCAC matchup at Charles A. Henry Field in the season and home finale. It will also be Senior Day with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
