HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College football team was defeated by Allegheny (Pa.) College, 43-21, today (Saturday, Nov. 6) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in the home finale and Senior Day at Charles A. Henry Field. [Game Stats]
Following today’s game, the Terriers drop to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC. The Gators improve to 6-3 overall and 4-2 NCAC.
Both teams would struggle in the first half with turnovers, but it was Allegheny who scored the only points of the first quarter on a 19-yard touchdown pass play from quarterback T.J. Salopek to Robert Carlisle at the 5:59 minute mark to give the Gators a 7-0 lead after the first period.
Allegheny looked to be headed to another score late in the second quarter with the ball at the Hiram 15-yard line. But junior linebacker Steve Brown (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) ended the possible Allegheny scoring drive when he ripped the ball out of the Gator running back’s arms and took it 85 yards for the Terrier score and evened the game at 7-7 with 5:27 left to play in the half. Allegheny gained a little momentum just before the end of the half with a 24-yard field goal by Ryan Zipf to regain the lead, 10-7, at the break.
In the third quarter, Allegheny broke the game open scoring 19 points with a 14-yard TD run by Brian Tamburlin and a pair of TD completions to David Strawser and Sean Griffin that gave the Gators a 29-7 edge. Despite three scores by Allegheny, Hiram freshman defensive back Josh Peacock (Carson City, Nev./Carson) blocked two of the Gator extra point attempts.
Allegheny added to its lead in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns on running plays of 44 yards by Matt Deivert and five yards by Taylor O’Brien to take a commanding 43-7 lead. Hiram tallied the final points of the game beginning with a 53-yard pass play from junior quarterback Maxwell Bohon (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) to senior All-NCAC wide receiver Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) at the 5:49 mark to make the score 43-14. The Terriers found the endzone again late in the period with another TD completion from Bohon. This time junior wideout Shaun Zalewski (Cleveland/St. Edward) would be on the receiving end of the Bohon pass in the corner of the endzone with 1:55 left in the game. But the Gators had already built a large enough lead and went on to capture a 43-21 victory.
The Gators were led by Tamburlin who rushed for a game-high 112 yards in 22 carries and had one TD. Deivert finished the game with 97 yards in nine carries and added a TD. Salopek completed 18-of-27 passes for game-highs of 209 yards and three TD. Strawser led the Gator receivers with four catches for 52 yards and a TD. Defensively, Shane Heschke recorded a team-high five tackles.
Hiram was led by Campbell who caught game-highs of nine receptions for 147 yards and had a TD. Sophomore quarterback Brendan Rehor (Bay Village/Bay) completed 14-of-30 passes for 103 yards. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 34 yards in 10 carries. Bohon ended the game completing seven-of-eight passes for 142 yards and two TD. On defense, junior Oliver Dickerhoof (Alliance/Central Catholic) led the way with a game-high 12 tackles, including a tackle for loss and had a fumble recovery. Peacock also finished in double digits in tackles with 10 to go along with the two blocked kicks and a tackle for loss.
