DELAWARE, OHIO — The Hiram College football team was defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University, 47-24, today (Saturday, Nov. 13) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and season finale at Selby Field in Delaware, Ohio. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers end the season with a 1-9 overall record and 1-5 in the NCAC. The Battling Bishops end their season at 2-8 overall and 2-4 NCAC.
Hiram looked to make a statement early in the first quarter, scoring on its first possession of the game and marched 74 yards in four plays that ended in a 63-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Brendan Rehor (Bay Village/Bay) to senior All-NCAC wide receiver Glenn Campbell (Akron/Buchtel) to give the Terriers a 7-0 lead. OWU responded by scoring on its first possession of the game on a 10-yard TD pass from quarterback Mason Espinosa, his first of six TD passes on the day, to Dave Moglinicki with 9:02 left to play in the quarter. But the Bishops would miss the extra point as Hiram still led 7-6. OWU took the lead on its next possession, this time on a 17-yard pass play form Espinosa to Jermar Rayford, making the score 13-7 at the 3:41 mark. Neither team scored during the remainder of the quarter as the Bishops led 13-7 after the first stanza.
In the second quarter, Hiram regained the lead thanks to a 53-yard TD run by freshman Caleb Jones (Lake Placid, Fla./Lake Placid) with 6:12 left to play in the half, making the score 14-13. The Terriers added to their lead late in the period on a blocked OWU field goal try that was picked up by freshman Chase Laudato (Brunswick) and returned it 90 yards for the score. Following the Hiram kickoff, OWU then went 63 yards in eight plays in the final minutes to find the endzone on another TD completion by Espinosa with just 16 seconds remaining. The Bishops converted the two-point conversion to even the score at 21-21 heading into the locker rooms.
OWU took the lead near the midway point of the third quarter with Espinosa’s fourth TD toss of the game at the 7:58 minute mark. But the Bishops would again fail to convert the extra point attempt, making the score 27-21. Hiram later made it a one-possession game with a 33-yard field goal by sophomore Luke Russo (Strongsville/Bedford Chanel) narrowing the deficit to 27-24. OWU then took control with a pair of TD to end the quarter with a 80-yard TD strike and a three-yard TD run to extend the lead to 40-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bishops tallied the only score in the final quarter thanks to a 15-yard TD pass from Espinosa to Gabe Bram as OWU went on to the 47-24 victory.
Individually, OWU was led by Espinosa who completed 34-of-44 passes for 471 yards and six TD. Mogilnicki caught five passes for a game-high 135 yards and three scores. Danny Flanegan caught a game-tying high seven passes for 96 yards and had a TD. Chris Marshall led the Bishop running attack with 39 yards in 12 carries. Defensively, Pete Merkle and Taylor Smith each finished the game with six tackles.
Rehor completed 13-of-24 passes for 171 yards with a TD, but had three interceptions. Jones rushed for a game-high 61 yards in six carries and a TD. Campbell finished the game with six receptions for a team-high 94 yards and had a TD. Senior Luke Lewis (Fremont/St. Joseph) caught a game-tying high seven passes for 69 yards. Defensively, three Terriers recorded double-figure tackles led by junior linebacker Steve Brown’s (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) game-high 14 stops. Fellow junior linebacker Oliver Dickerhoof (Alliance/Central Catholic) added 13 tackles and sophomore linebacker Sam Gallagher (Strongsville) had 11 tackles.
