The winners of the annual Tom and Betty Niccolls First Year Essay Contest have been announced as the following:
- First Prize ($300): Emily Gilmore, “Bon Appetite America”
- Second Prize ($200): Mackenzie Barry, “Escargot and Me”
- Third Prize ($100): Logan Brewer, “Eating Food: a Basic Right, or a Governmentally Granted Privilege”
The contest asks first-year students to respond to a prompt relating to the annual ethics theme. This year’s theme is “Food and Hunger,” and students wrote about world hunger, food production and consumption, culture and diet and other topics.
This contest is generously supported by Betty Niccolls, in memory of the late Tom Niccols, professor of religion and college chaplain. The Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature and the Center for Engaged Ethics co-sponsor the contest.
Essays were judged by Anupama Joshi, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the National Farm to School Network.
