Hiram College

CANTON, OHIO  —  The Hiram College cross country teams competed at the Walsh/Malone University Invitational today (Saturday, Oct. 22) in Canton.  The Terrier men placed second in the 5k race and the women were fourth.  In addition, members of the Hiram women’s team competed in a 3k race and placed second overall as a team.  [Men’s 5k Results] [Women’s 5k results]

The men finished the event with a team total of 56 points to place second of four teams.  Walsh captured the men’s 5k team title with 19 points.  Point Park (Pa.) University rounded out the top-three schools with 73 points.

Senior Joe Hengoed (Seven Hills/Normandy) had the fastest overall individual time for the Hiram men at 17:13.87 and placed fourth out of 38 runners.  Junior Bryan Nemire (Berlin Heights/Edison) was second with a mark of 18:42.02 and was followed by fellow junior Brendan Curtin (Burton/Berkshire) in third in a time of 18:42.02.  Sophomore Forrest Reed (Seven Hills/Normandy) recorded the fourth fastest time for the Terriers at 18:51.52 and junior Dennis Kirimi (Nayiobi, Kenya) was fifth on the team with a time of 19:19.46.  Rounding out the men’s competitors was senior Don Daley (Chagrin Falls/University School) who completed the course in a time of 20:30.34.

In the women’s 5k race, Hiram finished with a team total of 102 points to place fourth of four teams.  Walsh won the overall event with 24 points and was followed by Cuyahoga Community College in second at 40 points.  Rounding out the top-three schools was Point Park with 86 points.

Individually, the top overall time was turned in by sophomore Laila Almassri (Parma/Normandy) who ran a 23:03.46 and placed 12th overall out of 35 runners.  Junior Megan Orosz (Mentor/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) was second with a mark of 25:31.96 and was followed by sophomore Clarissa Claflin (Mayfield/Mayfield Heights) in third with a mark of 25:32.37.  Junior Natalie Richardson (McConnelsville/Morgan) and senior Alexandra Oleszko (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) finished back-to-back with times of 25:57.65 and 26:08.37 respectively.

In the women’s 3k race, the five Terrier competitors finished in first through fifth place led by freshman Sarah Dutton (Columbia, Md./Long Beach) who posted a time of 12:02.02.  Freshman Patricia Bohls (Macedonia) was second with a mark of 12:08.68 and senior Christine Bienosek (Litchfield) had the third quickest time at 12:13.30.  Freshman Ellen Rochford (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) crossed the finish line in fourth place in a time of 12:18.24 and junior Amy Morton (Tacoma, Wash./St. Anthony Village, Minn.) was fifth with a time of 12:29.30.

The Hiram cross country teams will compete at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29.  This year’s championships will be hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield.  The first race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
