PITTSBURGH, PA. — The Hiram College cross country teams competed at the annual Carnegie Mellon University Invitational this afternoon (Saturday, Oct. 9) in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Terrier men finished 17th and the women were 24th. [Men’s Results] [Women’s Results]
The men finished the event with a team score of 441 points and placed 17th overall out of 22 teams. Wayne State University won the team title with 49 points, followed by host school Carnegie (Pa.) Mellon in second with 53 points. Duquesne (Pa.) University rounded out the top three with 71 points.
Junior Joe Hengoed (Seven Hills/Normandy) led Hiram with a time of 27:49.49 and placed 64th overall of 234 total runners. Sophomore Chris Pratt (North Canton/Hoover) had the second quickest time for the Terriers, completing the 8k course in a time of 29:04.58. Fellow sophomore Bryan Nemire (Berlin Heights/Edison) was third with a mark of 29:56.16 and senior Nicholas Michalenko (Moon Twp., Pa./Our Lady of Sacred Heart) was fourth with a time of 31:00.36. Sophomore Brendan Curtin (Burton/Berkshire) was the fifth Hiram runner to cross the finish line with a time of 31:02.80. Freshman Sam Ivcic (Maple Heights) was sixth at 33:07.77 and junior Don Daley (Chagrin Falls/University School) completed the scoring times for Hiram at 34:52.11. In addition, freshman David Stonebraker (Girard) turned in a time of 36:39.13.
The Hiram women ended the day with 641 team points to place 24th out of 24 teams. Wayne State came in first in the team standings with 41 points and CMU was second at 80 points. Franciscan University rounded out the top three schools with 119 points.
Individually, Hiram was paced by freshman Laila Almassri (Parma/Normandy) who ran a time of 22:33.08 and placed 117th overall out of 261 total runners. Fellow freshman Clarissa Claflin (Mayfield/Mayfield Heights) was second to cross the finish line for Hiram with a mark of 24:28.25. Senior Brianna Andrie (Perry) completed the 5k race in a time of 24:50.29 and was followed by freshman Carly Kidner (Ashtabula/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) who ran a 27:11.06. Sophomore Elizabeth Haase (Akron/Firestone) was fifth on the team with a time of 27:47.93. Rounding out the Hiram scoring times for the women was senior Anh Tran (Cleveland/John Marshall) who had a mark of 28:41.83.
The Hiram cross country teams continue its season next Saturday (Oct. 9) when it travels to Oberlin for the Oberlin College Invitational.
