GRANVILLE, OHIO — The Hiram College baseball team dropped both games of doubleheader against Denison University, 9-1 and 7-4, today (Saturday, Mar. 26) in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener in Granville. [Game One Stats] [Game Two Stats]
Following today’s games, the Terriers are now 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC. The Big Red improve to 10-8 overall and 2-0 NCAC.
In game one, Denison jumped out early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 edge. The Big Red added another in the fourth and broke the game open with a five-run sixth to increase the margin to 9-0. Hiram tallied its only run of the game in the top of the seventh on a throwing error that allowed freshman Mike Gatta (McDonald) to score from second base as the Terriers fell by the final score of 9-1.
Hiram posted three hits in the game with junior Lance Townsend (Garrettsville), sophomore Ian Sewolich (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) and freshman Shane Haidet (Alliance/Marlington) each recording a hit.
Sophomore Mike Lalonde (Willowick/South) started the game and went five innings allowing eight runs on nine hits and had two strikeouts. He is now 1-1 overall for the season following today’s loss. Senior Bubba Thurner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) pitched an inning of relief giving up one run on two hits and tallied a strikeout.
In a repeat of the first game, Denison quickly took control of game two by scoring three runs in the first inning. But Hiram evened the score with three runs in the fourth on a RBI single by freshman Tim Calhoun (Canfield) and a pair of bases loaded walks by seniors Andy Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local) and Doug Adkins (Frazeysburg/Riverview). Denison regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning for a 4-3 margin. The Terriers again matched the Big Red run with a run of thier own in the sixth thanks to a wild pitch that allowed Calhoun to score from third base making the score 4-4. But Denison took control with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-4 lead and would get Hiram to hit into three straight outs in the top of the seventh handing the Terriers a 7-4 loss.
Hiram was led at the plate by Calhoun who finished a perfect two-of-two with a pair of runs scored and a RBI. Junior Steve Dunn (Westlake), freshman George Blake (Parma) and Gatta also recorded base hits.
On the mound, sophomore Travis Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local) got the start, but suffered the loss after going five and two-thirds innings giving up seven runs on eight hits and struck out two. He is now 2-2 overall for the season. Senior Eric Schaffer (Kent/Roosevelt) pitched a third of an inning allowing no runs and just one hit.
Hiram is scheduled to play against Kenyon College tomorrow (Sunday, Mar. 27) in a NCAC doubleheader in Gambier. The first game is scheduled to start at noon.
