Hiram College

The Hiram College baseball team lost a pair of games against Oberlin College, 11-0 and 14-8, in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener at Dill Field in Oberlin.

Oberlin (8-8, 2-0 NCAC) jumped out early in game one scoring a run in the first inning to grab the early lead.  The Yeomen then scored four more runs in the third to extend the margin to 5-0.  Oberlin continued the offensive charge with another run in the fifth and then put the game away with a five-run seventh inning while holding Hiram (9-8, 0-2 NCAC) scoreless for the 11-0 shutout.

Hiram had seven hits in the game led by junior Jim Jaksa (Chesterland/West Geauga) who finished a perfect three-for-three.  Four other Terrier players recorded base hits in the game.

On the mound, sophomore Nate Weiss (Warren, Mich./University Liggett) started the game and pitched four-and-a-third innings allowing six runs on nine hits and struck out three batters.  He was also credited with the loss and is now 3-2 overall for the season.  Fellow sophomore Pat Rhodes (Girard) came on to pitch two-and-a-third innings in relief surrendering five runs on six hits.  Junior Zach Dolph (Akron/Timken) pitched the final third of an inning giving up no runs or hits.

In the nightcap, Oberlin got on the board first with a solo homerun, but Hiram came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI double by junior Tim Calhoun (Canfield) and a RBI ground out by sophomore Mark Leone(Boardman) to make the score 2-1.  The Yeomen evened the score in the second with a run, but the Terriers retook the lead with a three-run third inning on RBI base hits by Jaksa and Calhoun and on a wild pitch for a 5-2 advantage.  Oberlin got one of the runs back in the sixth, but Hiram again answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on an error and a passed ball to extend the margin to 7-3.  In the eighth, the Yeomen crossed the plate five times to take over the lead, 8-7.  Hiram rallied with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI double by Jaksa to tie the game at 8-8 going into the ninth inning.  Oberlin tallied six runs in the top half of the inning and got the Terriers to record three straight outs to end the game and record the 14-8 final.

Hiram was led at the plate by Calhoun who finished three-of-four with a run scored and four RBI.  Jaksa and senior Ian Sewolich (Cleveland/St. Ignatius) also recorded multi-hit efforts with Jaksa going two-of-three and a pair of runs scored, while Sewolich went two-of-five and scored two runs.

Sophomore J.T. Taylor (Niles) started the game and pitched seven innings allowing four runs and struck out six batters, but would get the no decision.  Sophomore Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) and freshman Evan Wutrick (Alliance/Marlington) both pitched a third of an inning.  Senior Torrey Stimson (Hudson/Walled Lake, Mich.) pitched the final inning-and-a-third and suffered the loss after giving up five runs.

Hiram is scheduled to host Allegheny (Pa.) College in a NCAC doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 6 at Robert O. Fishel Field.  The first game is scheduled to begin at noon.
