HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College baseball team lost to Mount Union College, 16-8, today (Tuesday, Apr. 6) in a non-conference single nine-inning game at Robert O. Fishel Field. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-18 overall, while the Purple Raiders improve to 9-8 overall.
Mount Union quickly took control of the game scoring six runs in the top of the first and second innings to lead 12-0. Hiram got on the board in the bottom of the second on a defensive error that allowed sophomore Lance Townsend (Garrettsville) to score from third base. The Purple Raiders answered the Hiram score with a run of their own in the top of the third to increase the margin to 13-1. Hiram made up some ground in the third thanks to a RBI double by Townsend and a two-RBI double by junior outfielder Doug Adkins (Frazeysburg/Riverview), making the score 13-4. The Terriers went on to add a run in the fifth and three runs in the eighth thanks to a pinch hit three-run homerun by senior Matt Rinaldi (Cape Coral, Fla./Cape Coral), his first of the season. Mount Union scored two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth en route to the 16-8 final.
Hiram recorded 12 hits, but would be outhit for the game, 23-12. The Terriers were led by Adkins who finished three-of-five with a run scored and two RBI. Townsend, sophomore infielder Randy Miller (Glenmont/West Holmes) and junior outfielder Travis Richey (Petersburg/Springfield Local) all recorded two hits. Townsend also scored two runs and a RBI. Travis Richey also scored a run.
On the mound, freshman Josh Weber (Lorain/Clearview) started the game and pitched one complete inning allowing 10 runs on 10 hits and had two strikeouts. He would also be given the loss and is now 1-5 overall for the season. Four other Terriers would also see playing time.
Hiram will travel to Gambier tomorrow (Wednesday, Apr. 7) for the first of two NCAC doubleheaders that were postponed earlier this season against the Lords. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
