Tomorrow, the music department will host an event that combines two art forms: poetry and music.
“Ascending the Abyss of Eternity: American Poetry in Song” is an original work by Dawn Sonntag, assistant professor of music at Hiram, and Jonathan Kolm, assistant professor of music at Northern Virginia Community College, with Willard P. Greenwood II, associate professor of English at Hiram. It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on May 6, at Hayden Auditorium in Bates Hall.
The piece features settings of poetry by Walt Whitman and Sara Teasdale, performed by Sonntag, soprano, and Kolm, piano. Greenwood will speak about the poets.
Several of the poems are about war, in line with this year’s theme for the Center for the Study of Ethics and Values.
Admission is free and open to all.
